Due to World Cup qualifiers, no Spanish national team players were available. But here's where it gets controversial... The Spanish Prime Minister has even called for Israel to be barred from international sports.
The Palestinian team's journey continues. They are also scheduled to play against a selection of players from Spain's Catalonia region in Barcelona. It's worth noting that many of the Palestinian players have never actually been to Gaza. Some play professionally in Qatar, Chile, Iceland, and the United States.
These players represent the last vestige of Palestinian football, which has been severely impacted by two years of Israeli actions, which the Spanish government has described as genocide. The consequences have been devastating: no functioning league, no active clubs, and hundreds of athletes wounded or killed. Among the fallen is Suleiman Al-Obeid, a well-known footballer known as the "Palestinian Pelé."
The Palestine Football Association reported that Al-Obeid was killed during an Israeli attack on civilians awaiting humanitarian aid. Palestinian Football Federation president Jibril Rajoub stated that sports were deliberately targeted, with 289 locations destroyed in Gaza. He also shared that 1,100 athletes, employees, coaches, and referees have been killed, including their captain, and thousands more have been injured or are missing. Rajoub is also the secretary-general of Fatah, the party of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
